Rhubarb Martini

Jul 27th

This Martini is amazing if I do say so myself! I bought 2lbs of rhubarb at the farmer’s market, I usually make a rhubarb pie for Pete because that is absolutely his favorite, but decided to indulge myself with a refreshing summer martini. I decided to share one with him too, since it makes two martini’s. Even though I probably could have had both of them myself, I decided not to be selfish. It is a simple combination of either vodka or gin and triple sec, which is an orange liqueur, and a homemade rhubarb simple syrup. I made these for all the relatives and friends that came to visit us in Michigan and they were definitely a hit. I do love to entertain and my friends all ask me what the secret is to a successful cocktail party or dinner party? The most important tip I can give is be prepared and organized. Do all your shopping ahead of time, preferably a day or two before the big event. I like to get everything prepped and ready to go when the guests arrive. If I’m making appetizers, I will get them all done before the guests get here and pop them in the oven and have them ready to go and plated by the time they arrive. I also will set out all my serving dishes ahead of time and know what will go on what platter. I have my bar all set and ready to go, so I can make the first one for people when they arrive and then they can just help themselves. If there is an entree involved, I make sure to have all ingredients ready to go and prepped. I will make sure to have the whole kitchen cleaned before the guests get here and as one friend pointed out, if any of the guests arrive early and you still have dishes in the sink. Just throw them in the garage or guest room and do the dishes later, just don’t forget they’re in there. The table will be set and have place settings. I rarely am busy cooking or cleaning when I have a party, I like to be a great hostess and mingle with the crowd. So there you have it, shop ahead of time, do all your prep work, set the table and the bar. Enjoy your evening with family and friends, let me know how you like the rhubarb martini.

Rhubarb Martini

Makes two

4 ounces of vodka or gin, whichever you prefer

2 ounces of triple sec

2 ounces of rhubarb simple syrup ( 2lbs of rhubarb, 3/4 cup of sugar, 6 cups of water)

Clean and cut rhubarb into 1 inch pieces. Put rhubarb into a large saucepan. Add the sugar. Next put the 6 cups of water or just enough to cover the rhubarb. Bring to a boil and stir. Lower the temperature to med low, and let simmer for 40 minutes. Stir occasionally. After 40 minutes remove from stove and let cool. When the rhubarb is cool strain into a pitcher. This simple syrup will last in the refrigerator for 2 weeks, then you can have a martini every night for two weeks, or if you like more than two in one night! Next use a martini shaker and put ice about 3/4 full. Pour the 4 ounces of vodka or gin in, next pour the 2 ounces of triple sec in, and then the 2 ounces of the rhubarb simple syrup. Strain through the martini shaker and serve into chilled and sugared rimmed martini glasses. Cheers!
