Sweet Onions
I have been making these onions for so long, I got the recipe from my Mother years ago. They are always such a big hit with everyone I have ever served them to. A very simple recipe, with a nice outcome. You can make these with sweet onions, or Maui onions. I made them with sweet onions from Visser Farms, that I bought from the Holland Farmer’s Market in Holland Michigan. The flavors mix together for a sweet and savory side dish. You can tent them in tin foil and throw on the grill if you don’t want to heat up your oven this time of year. We had them with BBQ ribs the other night and everyone always goes back for seconds. We have been having a wonderful time with P.J. and Ashlee, they are here for another week from Thursday and then they head on to Ashlee’s home town of Murphy Texas. They have been helping me with the food blog and I am so thankful for all they have done to help me understand what the heck I am doing. I am so enjoying this new passion of mine and hope all that are reading this do too! Please feel free to comment right after the recipe and let me know what you think. Happy Grilling!
Sweet Onions serves 4 to 6
4 to 6 sweet onions or Maui Onions (cleaned and peeled)
1/2 stick of butter chilled
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/2 cup of soy sauce
3 Tbs of worcestershire sauce
tin foil (enough for tenting)
clean your onions and put them on a large piece of tin foil.
cut the butter in 1/4 inch piece’s, and put on top of onions
next add brown sugar, soy sauce and worcestershire sauce, add to onion mixture
tent the tin foil around the onions and put on the grill over medium heat for 40 minutes, or if you dare turn your oven on in the middle of the summer, bake at 350 for 40 minutes and serve. Enjoy, please let me know what you think?

I have not looked at a recipe in decades but when things slow down around here I just might try this one. Sounds delicious, and simple.

This sounds delicious. We have grilled the Maui sweets and the vidalias for a long time but only with butter. I like the idea of sweet and savory. Love the blog. Keep it coming!

Hi Laura, thanks for the nice comment. I love these onions and such an easy recipe too. Let me know how you like them next time you grill? Hope all is well with you. Let me know how the empty nest thing is going in the fall. Maybe we can get together and either cry on each others shoulder or celebrate! Stacey

What a cool idea – I would never have thought to do something like this. Now we just need to get a grill. Woe is me.
